چکیده

Mini review Application of RNA interference (RNAi) by feeding to pest management M1 Yuki Maruyama RNA interference (RNAi) is a powerful tool to specifically suppress gene expression in both invertebrates and vertebrates, therefore, it has not only been used widely to study gene function in insects, also thought to be available for application to pest management. However, practical utilization was unfeasible in field because of inefficiency of the general manner injecting dsRNA to individual insect body cavity. Recently, some studies reported that gene knockdown in several insects can be induced successfully through feeding with dsRNA. This review focused on RNAi caused by feeding dsRNA, and the possibility of application of RNAi to pest management.

Parental RNA interference of genes involved in embryonic development of the western corn rootworm, <i>Diabrotica virgifera virgifera</i> LeConte

RNA interference (RNAi) is being developed as a potential tool for insect pest management and one of the most likely target pest species for transgenic plants that express double stranded RNA (dsRNA) is the western corn rootworm. Thus far, most genes proposed as targets for RNAi in rootworm cause lethality in the larval stage. In this study, we describe RNAimediated knockdown of two development...

Establishing an In Vivo Assay System to Identify Components Involved in Environmental RNA Interference in the Western Corn Rootworm

The discovery of environmental RNA interference (RNAi), in which gene expression is suppressed via feeding with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) molecules, opened the door to the practical application of RNAi-based techniques in crop pest management. The western corn rootworm (WCR, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) is one of the most devastating corn pests in North America. Interestingly, WCR displays...

Enhancement of RNA Interference Effect in P19 EC Cells by an RNA-dependent RNA Polymerase

Background: RNA interference (RNAi) is a phenomenon uses double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to specifically inhibit gene expression. The non-specific silencing caused by interferon response to dsRNA in mammalian cells limits the potential of utilizing RNAi to study gene function. Duplexes of 21-nucleotide short interfering dsRNA (siRNA) inhibit gene expression by RNAi. In some organisms, siRNA can als...

Progress Towards RNAi-Mediated Insect Pest Management

Gene suppression via RNA interference (RNAi) provides an alternative strategy for insect pest management. The ingestion by insects of double-stranded RNAs targeting essential insect genes can trigger RNAi and lead to growth inhibition, developmental aberrations, reduced fecundity, and mortality. This RNAi response is particularly acute in certain coleopteran species, most notably the western co...
